The ancient city of Baalbek is one of the greatest archaeological mysteries of all time. Located east of the Litani River in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon, Baalbek is world famous for its exquisitely detailed yet monumentally scaled Roman temple ruins.

It is Lebanon's greatest Roman treasure, and it can be counted among the wonders of the ancient world, containing some of the largest and best preserved Roman ruins.

The city has made a name of its own because of the monumental ruined temples during the roman period. During that time, Baalbek was called the Heliopolis, which was one the biggest sanctuaries.

This is said to be one of the greatest wonder of the ancient world and one of the best built of the roman dynasty. These are till date preserved as the best piece of art by the Romans.

The Romans had constructed an extraordinary temple complex in Baalbek consisting of three separate temples - one for Jupiter, one for Bacchus and one for Venus. These Roman temples were actually built on top of an ancient 5 million square foot platform that was made from some of the largest stones ever used in any construction project in the history of the earth. 

It is said that the history of Baalbek is rooted to 5000 years back. A lot of tourists visit this place because of the spirituality that is attached to it.

The Sydney Opera House is situated in Sydney, Australia. The opera house was made a part of the UNESCO, World Heritage Site in 2007 and is said to be the world’s most distinct 20th century buildings.

The Sydney Opera House is a multi-venue performing arts centre in the Australian city of Sydney. It was conceived and largely built by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, finally opening in 1973 after a long gestation starting with his competition-winning design in 1957.

It is also considered one of the most famous performing art centers in the world and also received the Pritzker prize in the year 2003.

The Sydney Opera House is located on the Sydney Harbor, which is very close to the Sydney Bridge. The opera house serves as a venue for art performing center rather than just the opera theater.

The opera house has a concert hall with a seating capacity of 2,679 seats, the Opera Theater with a seating capacity of 1507 seats, a drama theater that can accommodate 544 seats, a play house, a studio, Utzon Room and a Forecourt.

The first performance in the complex, in the Opera Theatre on 28 September 1973, was The Australian Opera's production of War and Peace by Prokofiev. The Sydney Opera House was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 20 October 1973.

The History of Sistine Chapel in the Vatican Museums in Rome, probably the most discussed building in the world, focuses initially on the Renaissance and Michelangelo.  The frescoes that decorate the Sistine Chapel represent the finest moment of the Renaissance movement.

Michelangelo's famous Sistine ceiling depicts scenes from Genesis in dramatic and moving detail, while The Last Judgment on the end wall is striking and powerful. As if that were not enough, the side walls are covered with important Renaissance frescoes by other artists, depicting biblical scenes and contemporary popes.

But the Sistine Chapel is more than the sum of its artistic wonders: it is a symbolic statement of papal authority and the place in which papal elections in conclave are held to this day.

It was built between 1475 and 1483 for Pope Sixtus IV by Giovannino de' Dolci. Some of the great artists who designed the walls of the Sistine Chapel were Sandro Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, Pinturicchio, and Luca Signorelli.  

The walls were decorated according to the partition of the world history into three eras: the first era was before the Ten Commandments were given to Moses, the second between Moses and Christ's birth, and the third was the Christian era thereafter. The second and the third eras have been represented in the Quattrocento frescoes on the Chapel's side walls with stories drawn from the life of Moses and Jesus Christ.  

The Sistine Chapel is one of the main attractions to visit in Vatican City. The highlight of a visit to the Vatican Museums, the famous chapel contains ceiling and altar frescoes by Michelangelo and is considered one of the artist's greatest achievements and is also decorated from floor to ceiling by some of the most famous names in Renaissance painting.

The leaning tower of Pisa, known as Torre Pendente di Pisa in Italian, is different than most medieval architecture. This particular section won't cover the highly advanced construction techniques that were used, it is important to mention how this tower's design is significant.

The Leaning Tower is the third oldest building on Pisa's Piazza del Duomo or Cathedral Square, the Cathedral and Baptistery were first.

The construction of the Tower of Pisa began on August 9, 1173. Originally designed to be a bell tower, the tower actually stood upright for over 5 years, but just after the completion of the third floor (1178) it began to lean. The citizens of Italy were shocked as it began to lean ever so slightly.

In 1964, Italy asked help to prevent the Leaning Tower from toppling. They wanted to keep the lean though, because of its importance for Pisa's tourism. A team of engineers and historians came together on the Azores to discuss the problem. As a temporary measure, a leaden counterweight (800 tones) was installed.

In 1987, the Leaning Tower of Pisa was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site, along with the entire Piazza Del Duomo.

Pompeii is a partially buried Roman town-city near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania. Pompeii was destroyed and completely buried during a long catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius spanning two days in the year AD 79.

Pompeii is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Italy, with approximately 2,500,000 visitors every year. Pompeii in A.D. 79 was a thriving provincial center with a population of between 10,000 and 20,000 people a few miles from the Bay of Naples. 

The objects buried beneath Pompeii were well-preserved for almost two thousand years. The lack of air and moisture allowed for the objects to remain underground with little to no deterioration, which meant that, once excavated, the site had a wealth of sources and evidence for analysis, giving detail into the lives of the Pompeiians.

Before Pompeii succumbed to the eruptions, it used to be a blossoming township and a progressive commercial port of the Sarno River in Italy. The most notable buildings that have been excavated from the ashes are a Roman basilica and an amphitheatre.

Pompeii was one of the earliest excavated cities in the world, where archeological work started in 1738. Today, Pompeii city is a highly visited tourist place due to its unique architectural designs.

The history of the Great Wall is said to start from the spring and Autumn Periods when seven powerful states appeared at the same time. In order to defend themselves, they all built walls and stationed troops on the borders. At that time, the total length of the wall had already reached 3,107 miles, belonging to different states.

Scholars estimate that the Great Wall with all its branches once stretched for 6,200 miles, from the Yalu River in the northeast to Xinjiang in the northwest. Today it measures 6,000 miles. The Great Wall has suffered serious damage from wind and water erosion, as well as man-made destruction.

In the past it has been a treasure store of stone for many a poor farmer. Between 1870 and 1974, the 8th Route Army stationed at Gubeikou destroyed 9,840 feet of the wall to use the stone to erect some barracks. Later in 1979, the State ordered the same army group to tear down their barracks and rebuild the wall.

Owing to its long history, natural disasters and human activities, many sections of the Great Wall are severely damaged and disappearing. Being a world-famous engineering project and witness to the rise and fall of Chinese history, the Great Wall, needs us to take immediate action to protect it.

Today, the Great Wall is generally recognized as one of the most impressive architectural feats in history. In 1987, UNESCO designated the Great Wall a World Heritage site.

The Mezquita of Cordoba or Mosque of Cordoba is a Roman Catholic Cathedral located in Cordoba, Spain. Mezquita is a Spanish word and it means mosque. The Mezquita was built in the 10th century during the ruled of Abd- ar-Rahman III, who was one of the greatest rulers in the history of Islam.

The place was initially built as a Church, however, when the Muslim ruler took over the place, they started using it as a mosque and extended it till it became the second largest mosque in the entire world.

Previously the site had been occupied by a Christian church dedicated to Saint Vincent that had been built by the Visigoths around 500 CE. Before that, when Córdoba was a provincial capital in the Roman Empire, the site was occupied by a temple dedicated to Janus, the double-headed god of doorways and gates.

Mezquita is said to be the most proficient monument of the Cordoba. Once the Spanish took back the site from the Muslims, they once again converted the place from a mosque to a church. Today, the Mezquita is used for the purpose of Church and the normal fee to visit the Mezquita is 6 Euros.

Although it does not fit in with the rest of the mosque, the 16th-century Baroque choir is an impressive sight, with an intricate ceiling and richly carved 18th-century choir stalls.

Outside the Mezquita is the Courtyard of the Orange Trees (Patio de los Naranjos), which in springtime is perfumed with orange blossoms and has a beautiful fountain.

The Terracotta Army or otherwise known as the "Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses” is a collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. It is a form of funerary art buried with the emperor in 210–209 BC and whose purpose was to protect the emperor in his afterlife.

In March 1974, a group of peasants digging a well in drought-parched Shaanxi province in northwest China unearthed fragments of clay figure—the first evidence of what would turn out to be one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of modern times. 

Near the unexcavated tomb of Qin Shi Huangdi—who had proclaimed himself first emperor of China in 221 B.C.—lay an extraordinary underground treasure: an entire army of life-size terra cotta soldiers and horses, interred for more than 2,000 years.

The terracotta figures are life-sized. They vary in height, uniform and hairstyle in accordance with rank. Most originally held real weapons are spears, swords, and crossbows. The figures were also originally painted with bright pigments, variously colored in pink, red, green, blue, black, brown, white and lilac.

The artifacts offer a glimpse of the treasures that attract visitors from around the world to the Xi'an museum site, where 1,900 of an estimated 7,000 warriors have been disinterred so far.

Then in 1859, the Vincentian father Pedro Maria Boss arrived Rio de Janeiro and was mesmerized by the mysterious beauty of the Corcovado mountain that he suggested the construction of a religious monument in honor of Princess Isabel, which in 1921 gave way for the idea of a great statue of Christ viewable by all in the marvelous city of Rio. 

After a hard competition, the project by the engineer Heitor da Silva Costa is chosen and in September, a national fundraising campaign for the works is organized.

Finally, in 1927, the construction of the statue begins after models of diverse sizes had been constructed. All calculations were done by Coast Hisses, helped by Pedro Viana and Heitor Levy, which during the years of construction, resided in a shed of wood at the foot of the monument.

In October 12, 1931, the famous Statue of Christ the Redeemer was inaugurated. The final design of the monument was authored by the fine artist Carlos Oswald and the French Sculptor Paul Landowski was placed in charge of executing the sculpture. 

The monument to Christ, the Redeemer on the Corcovado Mountain becomes the largest art déco sculpture in the world.

Today, a Grand Canyon vacation involves more than peeking over the Canyon’s rim. Tours, river rafting expeditions, hiking, mule rides, and camping are just a sampling of the delights that various rims of the canyon offer.

In 1855, Scottish explorer David Livingstone came accross this magnificent waterfall while attempting to find a route to the East Coast of the African continent. Travelling south east from Luanda to Sesheke, he encountered the waterfall and named it the Victoria Falls after the British Monarch, Queen Victoria. 

In 1989 Victoria Falls was inscribed as a World Heritage Site. What makes the concept of World Heritage exceptional is its universal application. World Heritage sites belong to all the peoples of the world, irrespective of the territory on which they are located.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seek to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity.

The Victoria Falls is also known for being one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world and when the river is in flood, the Falls are the largest curtain of falling water in the world. The Falls and the surrounding rainforest are preserved as a 23.4 kilometer National Park and form one of Zimbabwe’s four World Heritage sites.

The Eiffel Tower was built as a result of the International Exhibition of Paris or the Paris Exposition of 1889. The International Exhibition of France was done in order to commemoration the 100 year anniversary of the French Revolution. The Prince of Wales, King Edward VII, opened the tower after considering the 700 proposed designs. 

Gustav Eiffel's design was chosen but 300 petioners opposed its construction. Nevertheless, the Eiffel Tower was built in 1889 after being designed in 1884. Construction began in 1887 until 1889. The tower was used as a key place in Paris to measure the wind speed. Also, Eiffel encouraged many scientific experiments to take place on the Eiffel Tower such as Foucault's giant pendulum.

There is a exhibition at the first floor where they show a short movie at the Gustave Eiffel and the 1889-year world exhibition. It was not meant that this tower should be neither permanent nor the symbol of Paris. It was with the radio transmission it got a raison d'être. 

This 324 meters high tower, who ones was despised, is today the queen among the monuments of Paris. The face-lift, which the tower was given related to its 100 years day, was coincides with the new contract.

According to Angkor Wat, the name itself, Angkor, derives from a Sanskrit word meaning holy city. Wat, of course, in Khmer means temple. There is a single temple complex called Angkor Wat, located near Siem Reap in northeast Cambodia, but it has come to represent a whole complex of wonderful temples and stonemasonry and artwork throughout the area. It is the single largest religious structure in the world, and surely one of the worlds wonders of art and architecture.

Angkor Wat was conceived and constructed under Suryavarman II (r. 111350). Angkor Wat and the complex of temples surrounding it, planned as a sepulcher and a monument to the divinity of the monarch and measuring about 1 sq mi (2.6 sq km), it is probably the largest religious structure in the world. It was built at the height of the Khmer Empire, which at the time controlled Cambodia, Laos, much of Vietnam, and a portion of Thailand.

 The city and temple were rediscovered by a Khmer king and his entourage in the latter part of the 16th century, and was also discovered by Spanish and Portuguese traders, who were awestruck by its wonder and beauty. The temple was discovered again by the French in the 19th century.

Angkor Wat has come to be a source of great pride for the Khmer people of Cambodia and increasingly an international tourist destination and they have it as a symbol on their national flag.

The Coliseum, also known as "Amphitheatre Flavio", built on the order of the Imperator Vespasiano in the honour of the grandiosity of his empire, was inaugurated by his son, Tito, in 80 after Christ with celebrations 100 days long.

The Colosseum was a place where a lot of people could sit and watch entertainment. The entertainment was mostly people killing animals, or people killing each other. It was almost exactly like a football stadium today. It was built of concrete and marble and limestone.

In general, to the Coliseum are also associated the persecutions suffered by the Christian martyrs, also if, according to recent studies, there are not documented proofs demonstrating the effective existence of massacres and slaughters inside the walls of the Amphitheatre Flavio. In any case, in 313 after Christ, the Imperator Constantine proclaimed Christianity the official religion of the empire, obviously forbidding the executions of Christians but also the combats between gladiators and the hunting spectacles.

During the following centuries the Coliseum initially became a cemetery, and then a fortress called "Frangipane" and finally a sort of cava for the construction materials. The degradation of the structure due to fires, earthquakes and sacks was stopped by Pope Benedetto XIV who consecrated the Amphitheater to the Via Crucis and forbade any ulterior spoliation.

Easter Island

Name: Easter Island

On Easter Sunday, April 5, 1722, a Dutch sea captain named Jacob Roggeveen landed his ship on an island known as Te Pito o Te Henua, meaning “The Center of the World.” Captain Roggeveen renamed the island Easter Island.

Since the island consists of volcanic rock, the early inhabitants quarried the material into giant statues, some as tall as 14 feet, 6 inches and weighing about 14 tons. This was the reason for the depletion of the rich forestry. The villagers used the trees to transport these giant rocks all over the island as early as AD 700. 

Most of the surviving statues are lined up all along the shoreline facing out to sea. Their faces and bodies resemble similar statues in Polynesia but have evolved uniquely. The statue cult symbolized male dominance and power throughout the societal structure of the inhabitants; not only signifying power and stature, the natives believed they were indwelled by a sacred spirit.

New Agers are enthralled by places like Easter Island, the pyramids, and Stonehenge. There have even been claims of mystic energy fields and alien influence. The mysteries of this ancient civilization have caused theories to form and today many New Agers consider it to be a very spiritual place.

The statues that look out to sea are a poignant reminder that man is forever searching and seeking a place of peace and harmony. Despite whatever meaning the early builders may have originally had for these figures, only a sense of loss and hopelessness remains.
